Description:

Women have been historically underrepresented in the dam industry, especially in leadership positions. In general, there is a lack of support system for female professionals to adapt, grow and succeed in the industry. In recent years a number of mentoring programs have been implemented to support and empower female dam professionals.

At this panel discussion, we are bringing together a diverse group of women professionals from different regions of the world, who have been deeply involved in various women mentorship or empowerment programs. They will share their experience as mentors, mentees and female leaders in our industry, as well as their efforts to inspire, support and lift up other female professionals. We will also engage with the audience to brainstorm ideas and develop actions to unlock the potentials of female professionals in the dam industry.

WAPDA’s experience on construction of resilient dams & hydropower projects for clean, green and secure Pakistan

Time: 14:00-15:00
Room: J1

Speakers: Muhammad Azam Joya (General Manager WAPDA) and Mr. Husnain Afzal (Technical Officer to Chairman WAPDA)

Format: Power point presentation by speakers followed by questions & answers session

Short Abstract of Topic: WAPDA has embarked upon a grandiose plan to develop mega hydro power projects on a fast-track basis having worth over US$ 26 billion to enhance the share of hydropower in the overall generation mix to keep the consumer end tariff within affordable limits and to create a buffer for water security of the country.

WAPDA is leading Pakistan’s efforts to lessen carbon footprint and reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions as an improvement strategy to cope with the issue of climate change.

WAPDA is currently executing a number of strategically important mega projects designed by leading dam and hydropower experts of the world. On completion of these projects, the hydropower potential of the country would increase by 11,369MW and also augment the current water storage capacity by 11.7 Million Acre Feet (MAF). This would go a long way in addressing the acute challenges posed by climate change in the wake of current floods.
